Welcome to our Blog!
This is the blog of Deep River Cattle Company and the Allen Smith Family. In it you will find updates on our farm production and doings, information and pictures of the farm and family. Our son Corey provides all the photography. It is our family's goal with this blog to use it to inform our customers and help them get to know us, and also help our friends we have in many different places to keep up with what we are up to. Because this is a family farm, you will also find comments on other things that are important to us, especially our faith as Christians.

THE SENEPOLS ARE HERE

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

these are pictures some of our new cows. We bought brood cows and a bull. Our plan is to have at least 50 to 100 percent Senepol influence on all our future calves. Why Senepol???

1. Superior Meat Quality- I know of Senepol grassfed beef providers that are charging double our prices.
2. Grass Finishing Capability- they finish very well on grass and have been bred to do so. Their conformation is ideal for grass finishing.
3. Heat tolerance- They don’t need shade like black angus, they are a breed originating on St. Croiux in the Carribean.
4. Fescue Tolerance- Most cows don’t do well on fescue grass because it raises their body temperature, their weight gain in the summer is very slow. Studies with the Tenn Dept of Agriculture show that Senepol gains on Fescue to not differ from gains on similar cool weather grasses, and superior to Angus.
5. Great Maternal Breed- they are very docile, make very good moms
6. Insect fly tolerance- the flies and insects do not bother them because of their slick coat gene, which means finishing without fly sprays and devices.

These cattle are superior, and more expensive on our end. This is part of our long term commitment to improve our genetics and the performance of our cattle, providing the healthiest beef as economically as we can.
